Message check out autobody101.com they have some great articles and most of the forum regular's are pro's. That site has been the major confidence builder for me starting my own paint project.

And no you definately dont need a professional booth especially for one piece at a time, although you will want to rig something temporary to save your self some hassles. a common setup is hanging, or framing up some plastic, with a HVAC (like you buy at home depot for your furnace) filter up high for an intake, and a box fan down low for exhaust.

Truth be told depending on what type of equipment you have already it will more than likely cost you more than 300 to DIY it, but then you will at least be set up to do things on the cheap your next time around. A short list of things you will need might be:

quality abrasives - 3m or the like, the cheap stuff gets clogged up so bad it doesn't save you any money anyways. common grits are 36 for paint removal and body work, 80 and 220 for your primer, on up to 1000,1500,and 2000 for wetsanding the clear.

a Paint gun - Many choices, a kit including a gun, tips and nozzles can be had for as little as 50$ or well over 500. You also have to choose which type eitehr HVLP or a compliant gun (higher pressure lower volume) but make sure whatever you get is gravity fed. Supposedly HVLP guns are easier on beginner's because they dont dispense as fast so you can take your time a little more. keep in mind that HVLP guns can also require a compressor rated for very high CFM if your doing continuus spraying such as a whole car at once. I for myself considered the 3m Accuspray 10-G HVLP gun, and the Iwata lph-400 and Devilbiss Plus compliant guns. I ended up deciding on the devilbiss gun because it has great reviews and is considered by many to be one of the best guns for the buck. Can get it in a kit with another dedicated primer gun and all the tips and nozzles for around 325$ where the Iwata comes with only one tip, and costs almost 500$.

for liquid materials you have to decide if you want bc/cc or single stage. Single stage is cheaper and you can probably get it to match, but since the Z came factory with a basecoat /clearcoat finish I would probably go with that. The normal process is an epoxy primer over bare material, then 2 coats or so of high build primer , a coat of sealer, then your base and clear. for your fiberglass wing though you may be able to just sand it down a bit, spray with adhesion promoter, and skip to the primer step.

blending I dont know much about since I am painting everything, but they have several good articles on it at that site. I hope you do decide to try it yourself and then post pics of your results!
